Oneida Turning Stone art
Whenever the Oneida abandoned an old site and built a new village miles away, the massive stone would inexplicably reappear on its own. Without any human or physical intervention, it would magically stand watch on the outskirts of their brand-new clearing. While the phenomenon belongs to legend, a physical, 1,000-pound boulder closely tied to this history actually exists.1849, during a period of massive tribal displacement and land loss, the sacred stone was moved to the Utica Cemeteryto protect it from being stolen or destroyed. Decades later, the Oneida Indian Nation successfully reclaimed this vital piece of their heritage. Today, the actual sacred stone rests safely at the Oneida Indian Nation Council House in Oneida, NY—finally reunited with the people it followed for centuries. I was able to visit the Oneida Council hose, and see the stone. This inspired the art.
